Drug Treatment Outcomes for Persons on Waiting Lists.

This study examined treatment access and outcomes for persons placed on drug abuse treatment waiting lists.

Mirtazapine, a Noradrenergic and Specific Serotonergic Antidepressant, Attenuates Morphine Dependence and Withdrawal in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

Authors: Kang L, Wang D, Li B, Hu M, Zhang P, Li J The effects of mirtazapine, a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant, on morphine withdrawal and morphine conditioned place preference (CPP) were investigated in rats. Our results showed that some morphine withdrawal signs, including teeth chattering, grooming, chewing, and escape attendance, were attenuated by single pretreatments with 3, 10, or 30 mg/kg mirtazapine. Wet-dog shakes, rearing, and grooming were inhibited by daily pretreatment with 1, 3, or 10 mg/kg mirtazapine.

Case series of buprenorphine injectors in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Authors: Bruce RD, Govindasamy S, Sylla L, Haddad MS, Kamarulzaman A, Altice FL Diversion of buprenorphine has been described in settings where it is legally prescribed and has become an increasing concern in Malaysia; it resulted in banning of buprenorphine in Singapore where unsubstantiated case reports suggested that buprenorphine injection was associated with particularly poor outcomes. We therefore conducted a case series of qualitative interviews with buprenorphine injectors in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to examine further the issues surrounding buprenorphine injection as well as the abuse of midazolam in combination with buprenorphine. Interviews with 19 men do not suggest significant adverse health consequences from buprenorphine injection alone and injectors have adapted diverted …

Non-fatal overdose among a cohort of active injection drug users recruited from a supervised injection facility.

We examined recent non-fatal overdose experiences among participants enrolled in a prospective study of IDU recruited from within North America’s first medically supervised safer injecting facility. Correlates of recent non-fatal overdoses were identified using generalized estimating equations (GEE)

Exercise stress testing in recently abstinent chronic cocaine abusers.

Authors: Kanneganti P, Nelson RA, Boyd SJ, Ziegelstein RC, Gorelick DA We compared treadmill exercise stress testing (EST) in 28 medically screened, chronic cocaine users with the cardiovascular effects of an IV cocaine challenge (25 mg or 50 mg). All subjects had a clinically normal EST and echocardiography (except 2 subjects had septal wall hypokinesis). The EST produced significantly greater increases in heart rate and rate-pressure product than did the cocaine challenges.

Sex differences in non-reinforced responding for cocaine.

Authors: Kosten TA, Zhang XY Prior studies report no sex differences in cocaine consumption during maintenance of self-administration. We find female rats show poorer lever discrimination during acquisition of self-administration. Now, we test whether female rats show greater non-reinforced or ineffective responding (presses during infusion and time-out periods as well as inactive lever presses) than male rats during maintenance of cocaine self-administration (.0625-1.0 mg/kg/infusion) in Experiment 1
