Alcohol Awareness Week 19th November Alcohol Concern have announced the date for Alcohol Awareness Week 2012 will be November 19-25 . Last year supporter organisations said a date in the run-up to Christmas lent itself to making people think about alcohol and the amount they consume. The theme for this year is 'stigma', which may be interpreted differently depending on local needs.

Dentists urged to ask about alcohol

Dentists are being urged to ask patients about their alcohol consumption, in an article in the Royal College of Surgeons' Dental Journal. Professor Jonathan Shepherd, the main author of the paper, states that asking about alcohol consumption should be routine, and that there is a “need to introduce a screening tool ” to support this process. Alcohol is linked to problems with oral health, including oral cancers, which have doubled in males aged 40-49 years over the past 20 years.

Government announce review of drinking guidelines

The Government will review the current drinking guidelines for the first time in 15 years, the Department of Health announced. The Government's response follows the recent House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee (STC) report , which declared the existing guidelines as “confusing” and called for further clarity .
