Doctors who drink more themselves are more liberal in their advice to patients on alcohol consumption. They set higher thresholds for what is harmful, and while men who are heavy drinkers get to continue drinking, women are often advised to stop altogether, reveals a thesis from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden…
A report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists advises people over 65 should not drink more than 1.5 units of alcohol a day – at least half the standard adult daily guidelines . The reduced amount advised for older adults is the equivalent of about half a pint of lager (5%) or a small glass of wine. New research by University College London (UCL) says 'light' drinking during pregnancy does not harm a young child’s behavioural or intellectual development. However 'light' drinking meant only 1 or 2 units a week or at any one time; less than 'moderate' drinking which was classed as 3 to 6 units a week or 3 to 5 at any one time. See the report 'Light drinking during pregnancy: still no increased risk for socioemotional difficulties or cognitive deficits at 5 years of age?' [pdf] Advice over drinking when pregant has been somewhat controversial , with official NHS advice advocating a message of avoiding alcohol altogether.
