Sexual and Injection-Related Risks in Puerto Rican-Born Injection Drug Users Living in New York City: A Mixed-Methods Analysis

Background: : These data were collected as part of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) study.

Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV among pregnant women using injecting drugs in Ukraine, 2000-2010

Abstract Aims:  To compare clinical status, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rates, use of prevention of (PMTCT) interventions and pregnancy outcomes between HIV-infected injecting drug users (IDUs) and non-IDUs. Design and setting:  Prospective cohort study conducted in 7 HIV/AIDS Centres in Ukraine, 2000-2010. Participants:  Pregnant HIV-infected women, identified before/during pregnancy or intrapartum, and their live-born infants (n = 6200); 1028 women followed post-partum

Fellowships Awarded For Outstanding Research In Drug Use And HIV

The International AIDS Society (IAS) and the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) have announced the recipients of their third annual joint research fellowships. Recipients of the prestigious awards will receive US$75,000 each to advance scientific understanding of the linkages between drug use and HIV while fostering multinational research…

The increasing mortality burden of liver disease among opioid dependent people: Cohort study

Abstract Aims:  Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is highly prevalent among IDUs, and likely to cause significant mortality over time, but little research attention has focused upon the magnitude of this risk, particularly among ageing users. This study examined trends over time in mortality attributed to liver disease, and in particular contrasting this with other more commonly studies causes of death (AIDS, suicide and overdose) among an ageing cohort of heroin dependent people in Australia. Design:  Data linkage study of methadone treatment entrants with the National Deaths Index

Harm reduction, methadone maintenance treatment and the root causes of health and social inequities: An intersectional lens in the Canadian context

Background: Using our research findings, we explore Harm Reduction and Maintenance Treatment (MMT) using an intersectional lens to provide a more complex understanding of Harm Reduction and MMT, particularly how Harm Reduction and MMT are experienced differently by people dependent on how they are positioned. Using the lens of intersectionality, we refine the notion of Harm Reduction by specifying the conditions in which both harm and benefit arise and how experiences of harm are continuous with wider experiences of domination and oppression; Methods: A qualitative design that uses ethnographic methods of in-depth individual and focus group interviews and naturalistic observation was conducted in a large city in Canada.

Russian Government Urged By IAS To Radically Reassess Counterproductive Drug Policies

As Boris Gryzlov, speaker of the Russian state Duma, calls for a “total war on drugs” to tackle Russia’s growing drug problem, the International AIDS Society (IAS) urges the Russian government to radically reassess its approach to drug policy, and to accept that the war on drugs has failed dramatically from both a law enforcement and a public health perspective…

Rapid assessment response (RAR) study: drug use and health risk – Pretoria, South Africa

Background: Within a ten year period South Africa has developed a substantial illicit drug market. Data on HIV risk among drug using populations clearly indicate high levels of HIV risk behaviour due to the sharing of injecting equipment and/or drug-related unprotected sex.

Estimating national-level syringe availability to injecting drug users and injection coverage: Switzerland, 1996–2006

Abstract: Background: Measuring syringe availability and coverage is essential in the assessment of HIV/AIDS risk reduction policies. Estimates of syringe availability and coverage were produced for the years 1996 and 2006, based on all relevant available national-level aggregated data from published sources. Methods: We defined availability as the total monthly number of syringes provided by harm reduction system divided by the estimated number of injecting drug users (IDU), and defined coverage as the proportion of injections performed with a new syringe, at national level (total supply over total demand). Estimates of supply of syringes were derived from the national monitoring system, including needle and syringe programmes (NSP), pharmacies, and medically prescribed heroin programmes.

The Effect of Neighborhood Deprivation and Residential Relocation on Long-term Injection Cessation among Injection Drug Users (IDUs) in Baltimore,…

ABSTRACT Aims:  To determine the incidence of long-term injection cessation and its association with residential relocation and neighborhood deprivation. Design:  ALIVE (AIDS Linked to the Intravenous Experience) is a prospective cohort with semi-annual follow-up since 1988. Multi-level discrete time-to-event models were constructed to investigate individual and neighborhood-level predictors of long-term injection cessation

Abstinence and harm reduction: Can they work together?

In their paper “What is the role of harm reduction when drug users say they want abstinence?” have raised one of the key questions that the field of addictions treatment needs now to grapple with. As Neale and her co-authors have pointed out, there is a growing movement within the U.K. in which emphasis is being given to the importance of ensuring that drug treatment services are working towards drug users becoming drug free.
