Forthcoming events The 72nd Alcohol Problems Research Symposium is calling for abstracts or other presentation suggestions for the Spring 2012 meeting to take place Stonecross Manor Hotel in Cumbria on the 14th and 15th March. The meeting is part of a long-running series of friendly events in which Alcohol Research UK is helping to organise with Professor Moira Plant, Emerita Professor of Alcohol Studies at the University of the West of England.

October 10th was World Mental Health Day , the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual focus on mental health issues. This year's theme was “investing in health”, highlighting the need for further research, treatment and acceptability of mental health problems

ONS data: fall in alcohol related deaths; lifestyle survey highlights drinking differences

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released data showing alcohol-related deaths have fallen since 2008, but remain significantly higher than the the early 1990s. Results from the General LiFestyle Survey (GLF), formerly the General Household Survey (GHS), were also released highlighting drinking and smoking differences between between socio-economic groups. Don Shenker, Chief Executive of Alcohol Concern stated: “The slight fall in 2009 in alcohol-related deaths mirrors a slight drop in alcohol consumption, and while this is positive, it is wholly due to a drop in consumer spending as a result of the recession.” Figures from the BBPA have shown a downward trend in consumption since 2004 .
