The Department of Health has released the 'Change4Life Three Year Social Marketing Strategy' which includes commitments to new alcohol messages. The strategy describes how the Change4Life social marketing programme will support national obesity ambitions as well as promoting other lifestyle changes.

A survey in Wirral secondary schools amongst parents and their children (aged 11-17 years) investigated the influences of parental drinking and perceptions of alcohol consumption: Key findings from Parents' perceptions of their children's alcohol use include: When parents’ responses were matched with those of their child, the majority (86%) of parents’ perceptions of their child’s drinking status were correct: 33% rightly assumed their child drank alcohol and 53% rightly assumed that their child did not drink. However, 9% were not aware that their child drank when they did.

The new Government has outlined its plans for alcohol policy in its latest document 'The coalition: our programme for government' [pdf]. It states: We will ban the sale of alcohol below cost price. We will review alcohol taxation and pricing to ensure it tackles binge drinking without unfairly penalising responsible drinkers, pubs and important local industries.
The Conservatives have launched their 2010 election manifesto , sticking to previously announced measures to crack down on the causes of anti-social drinking including cheap, strong drinks. The manifesto states: “Under Labour’s lax licensing regime, drink-fuelled violence and disorder are a blight on many communities.

The report 'Children, Young People and Alcohol' aims to better understand parents’ and young people’s attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol and alcohol consumption. The research was also designed to investigate how children’s behaviour may be influenced by their parent’s attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol.
A campaign 'Why let drink decide?' has been launched to encourage parents to talk to their children about alcohol. A website resource www.whyletdrinkdecide.direct.gov.uk provides parents with information, links and tips on how to approach the subject

The Health Secretary Andy Burnham has this week indicated support for minimum pricing from the government, according to a report from the Telegraph. Burnham commented in an interview: “We need to balance the rights of people who drink responsibly with those who buy ludicrously cheap booze and go out and harm themselves and others. “The NHS Confederation and Royal College of Physicians expressed their views very clearly over Christmas – I can’t sit here and read reports like that and say it is all fine
