New technologies: Ingenuity transforms salmon sperm into cigarette filters

Salmon sperm is just not tasty – and that is good news for innovative technology company Nissei Bio, which wants to turn it into cigarette filters. While sushi lovers devour the sperm and sexual organs of fish such as cod, a lack of appetite for salmon “milt” means the northern island of Hokkaido generates thousands of tonnes of waste material rich in DNA each year, says Norio Nishi, Nissei Bio managing director. With the right processing, DNA can be used as a filter to capture dangerous toxins, says Professor Nishi, who is also professor emeritus at Hokkaido University.

E-Cigarettes Spark New Smoking War

Victoria Vasconcellos, the Chicago-based founder of an internet retailer, is in the thick of a regulatory battle that could affect millions of American cigarette smokers, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Vasconcellos imports electronic cigarettes from a Chinese manufacturer and sells them on her website, Cignot.com, to 14,000 customers. The 48-year-old is part of a growing legion of e-cigarette purveyors who are defying the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which contends the nascent nicotine products are drug devices that require pre-market approval and may pose their own health risks

The influence of cultural orientation, alcohol expectancies and self-efficacy on adolescent drinking behavior in Beijing

Objective We hypothesized that the drinking behavior of adolescents in China is influenced by expectancies and self-efficacy and that adolescents’ cultural orientation towards western versus traditional Chinese values influences expectancies, self-efficacy and drinking behavior, with western values leading to more dysfunctional patterns of beliefs and drinking, and that these beliefs are influenced by students’ gender and school environment. Methods A total of 1020 high school students from Beijing completed the Chinese Adolescent Alcohol Expectancy, the Chinese Cultural Orientation and the Chinese Self-regulation Self-efficacy questionnaires. Results Results generally confirmed our hypotheses. Higher negative expectancies and higher self-efficacy reduced the likelihood of drinking significantly. Higher positive expectancies increased the likelihood of regular drinking but not occasional drinking
