Alcohol Concern are calling on the public to urge MPs to push for minimum pricing ahead of the forthcoming national alcohol strategy. Alcohol Concern state: The next few weeks will be our last chance to influence the shape of the alcohol strategy, which will shape public policy on reducing alcohol harm for years to come.

The Prime Minister David Cameron is reportedly instructing officials to look at minimum pricing options, the much debated population level policy approach to reducing alcohol-related harm. Although Whitehall officials say no decision has yet been made, a Daily Telegraph report suggests measures could be outlined in the forthcoming national alcohol strategy expected in February 2012

Local authorities in Manchester considering a local bye-law approach to introducing a minimum alcohol price have received in principle support from the Prime Minister. Although the Coalition do not plan minimum pricing at a national level, David Cameron said 'where there can be local decisions we are very happy for that to happen'. Although Cameron raised caution over the possible issues over competition law, he promised to 'look at the details'

An article by Britain's leading GP has sparked debate over the role of personal responsibility and Public Health . Professor Steven Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners wrote the article 'Don't take offence if we lecture you on how to stay alive and healthy' , published in Sunday's Observer.
The new Government has outlined its plans for alcohol policy in its latest document 'The coalition: our programme for government' [pdf]. It states: We will ban the sale of alcohol below cost price. We will review alcohol taxation and pricing to ensure it tackles binge drinking without unfairly penalising responsible drinkers, pubs and important local industries.
The Chancellor has announced in the 2010 budget that duty on cider would increase by 10%. It was said the rise was to address 'a long-standing anomaly which has meant cider has been under-taxed in comparison to other alcoholic drinks.' It was also announced that the definition of cider will be changed in September 'to ensure specific strong ciders are taxed more appropriately'. However the duty rise has prompted criticism and debate with particular dissatisfaction reported amongst the real cider industry.
