Alcohol strategy gets Westminster debate A Westminster debate on alcohol policy and the forthcoming strategy has been highlighted by Alcohol Concern – see part 1 and part 2 of the debate which includes statements from MPs across the parties. Public health Minister Anne Milton said the forthcoming national strategy included ambition to “remove a significant number of units of alcohol from the UK market through changes in how alcohol is produced and sold”. Home Office consultation on late night levy & restriction orders as trade warns of on-trade burden

The Home Office have opened a consultation on new powers due to be brought in under Licensing Act reforms . The consultation is seeking specific responses on the late night levy and Early Morning Restriction Orders (EMROs) as measures to help curb late night drinking problems. See the press release here .

The Department of Health (DH) have released a suite of fact-sheets about the new public health system promised as part of the NHS Reforms . This includes further details of the responsibilities of local government and the operating model for the new Public Health England (PHE), following the Public Health white paper . Scotland's ban on multi-buy deals has reduced sales, according to figures from retail analysts Nielsen. Sales of wine fell 5%, spirits by 3% and beer by 8% during the first eight weeks of the ban compared to 2010. See reports from the BBC and the Herald .

New public health White Paper outlines future alcohol health policy

The Department of Health has published the new White Paper Healthy lives, healthy people: our strategy for public health in England . It sets out a new framework in which a new public health service, named Public Health England, will manage its own ring-fenced budget. The paper proposes Public Health England will take on full responsibilities from 2012 with ring-fenced funding allocated to local government from April 2013 as Primary Care Trusts are removed.

Licensing reform and below cost ban: news and updates July 2010 pt.2

Following recent confirmation of plans to overhaul the Licensing Act in the Structural Reform Plan , a series of workshops will take place to seek views on forthcoming policy proposals. The Home Office, now responsible for Licensing, are hosting the workshops which will seek 'views on policy proposals to be outlined in a forthcoming consultation on the rebalancing of the Licensing Act to empower local communities to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder.' Invitations to attend are being disseminated via local authorities though the Morning Advertiser have published further details .
