Since October 2012, Local Authorities have had the power to introduce a Late Night Levy (LNL) on premises opening after midnight under the PRSA 2011 . The Levy is intended as a means of raising a contribution towards police and council accrued costs of the late-night economy.
The Government has emphasised it is yet to confirm its decision on minimum unit pricing (MUP) as Home Office minister Jeremy Brown said the Government were listening to “powerfull arguments on both sides” following the recent consultation. The Home Office website still states it “will introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol” – but for how long? Last week fresh reports that the Prime Minister had u-turned on minimum unit pricing emerged, suggesting he had given in to pressure from a number of cabinet ministers.

The Department of Health's Change4Life campaign has launched a second alcohol advert warning how drinking can ‘sneak up on you’, encouraging people to check their drinking online using the Change4Life Drinks Checker . The advert is a similar version of the 'Dont' let the drink sneak up on you' campaign launched last year

The Local Government Association (LGA) have published guidance on Public health and alcohol licensing in England . Under new licensing measures councils have greater powers in relation to licensing decisions, and health bodies are now a 'responsible authority' .

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have released an alcohol briefing (PHB6) as part of its suite of public health briefings for local government – see NICE press release . NICE have based the guidance on its comprehensive set of resources, guidance and quality standards for the prevention and treatment of alcohol problems .
