Conclusions: Findings suggest that maintaining connections with mainstream civic activities can be related to reduced health risks, including HIV risk behaviors. Scientific Significance: This study contributes to understanding the relationships between involvement in civic/political participation and health, an area in which few studies have been conducted. Abstract Aims: To compare clinical status, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rates, use of prevention of (PMTCT) interventions and pregnancy outcomes between HIV-infected injecting drug users (IDUs) and non-IDUs. Design and setting: Prospective cohort study conducted in 7 HIV/AIDS Centres in Ukraine, 2000-2010. Participants: Pregnant HIV-infected women, identified before/during pregnancy or intrapartum, and their live-born infants (n = 6200); 1028 women followed post-partum

Abstract: Background: Mauritius, an Indian Ocean Island nation of approximately 1,000,000 people, has a large number of injecting drug users (IDUs), many of whom are infected with HIV and HCV. Mauritius has been expanding harm reduction and HIV services based in the belief that HIV prevalence amongst IDUs is somewhere between 30 and 60% and the IDU population size is around 20,000.

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found that among HIV-infected adults with alcohol problems, measuring their carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) biomarker was a poor and inaccurate method for detecting unhealthy drinking. These findings currently appear on-line in AIDS Care
Abstract: Introduction: Nearly 20% of the estimated 84,000 injecting drug users in Pakistan are HIV infected. Non-governmental organisations have implemented HIV interventions for IDUs in 7 cities in Pakistan.

Background: Proper knowledge of HIV transmission is not enough for people to adopt protective behaviors, but deficits in this information may increase HIV/AIDS vulnerability. Objective: To assess drug users’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the possible association between knowledge and HIV testing.
