The Monitoring and Evaluating Scotland’s Alcohol Strategy (MESAS) 2nd annual report has been released. The MESAS provides an update of Scotland’s alcohol strategy, the evaluation plan and the analyses of price, consumption, affordability and alcohol-related harms
A new report into the influences on non or light drinking young people in the UK has been released by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The study examined the lives and choices of young people (aged 16-25) who drink little or no alcohol.

A new report warns that online alcohol sales and purchasing by friends and family are creating a significant and emerging battleground in the fight against underage drinking. The report was published last month by ‘test purchasing’ company Serve Legal and Plymouth University .

The National Obesity Observatory has published a report on the links between alcohol consumption and obesity: Download: Obesity and alcohol – an overview The report states that although there is no clear causal relationship between alcohol consumption and obesity, there are associations between the two which are heavily influenced by lifestyle, genetic and social factors. Many people are also not aware of the calories contained in alcoholic drinks which can contain “nutrient poor” calories, for instance there are up to 180 calories in a large glass of wine and 250 calories in a pint of strong lager.

A new Institute of Medicine report specifies the types of research that the Food and Drug Administration should require before allowing tobacco companies to sell or advertise ‘modified risk’ tobacco products as being capable of reducing the health risks of tobacco use. While modified risk tobacco products could be one part of a comprehensive strategy to lower tobacco-related death and disease in the U.S., especially among tobacco users who are unable or unwilling to quit entirely, little is currently known about the products’ health effects and whether they pose less risk than traditional tobacco products

No prison-community care pathway in north east England Problem drinking offenders in north east England benefit from creative partnership working, but still this report baldly states that for prisoners whose sole substance use problem is drinking, a prison-community care pathway simply does not exist.
