Xie Jianping, a newly elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) has been criticized over his tobacco research, which claims low-tar cigarettes are less harmful to health. Yang Gonghuan, deputy director of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention described electing Xie as a member of the CAE as shameful, accusing him of doing research that misleads the public and helps the tobacco industry profit. The public has paid little attention to academician elections for a long time, so why has Xie’s election become a high-profile event rather than just an ignored scientific matter
