Course Rationale

This one day training course is designed for frontline workers who deal with clients who may have problems with their own drinking or may be affected by someone else. The course enables workers to assess how much someone is drinking, look at the kinds of problem they may have and identify the kinds of services that may be appropriate.
Aim: this course will provide the basic knowledge and skills required to identify how to respond to a client with an alcohol problem.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: -

Calculate the strengths of a range of alcoholic drinks
Use the unit measuring system to assess how much a client is drinking
Describe effects of alcohol on the human body and how these changes affect behaviour
Examine stereotypes of alcohol users and perceptions of alcohol use in society
Recognise signs of problem alcohol use in a client
Provisionally assess the levels of seriousness of a client's alcohol problem
Clarify the parameters of their own role
Make appropriate referrals to the main types of local and national services
Duration: one day
Who will benefit from this course: This course is essential for workers in non drug and alcohol agencies who may have affected clients
