Course Rationale

The evidence shows that motivational interviewing (MI) can be effective in helping people make positive changes in their lives. The fully interactive three-day training course combines discussion of the theory underlying MI with opportunities to learn and practice the core skills.

Participants will develop both a toolkit and a plan to help implement MI into their existing working practices. The course includes an additional ‘review day’ during which participants will have the opportunity to feed-back their thoughts on using MI in their workplace, and will take part in an observed MI session to put their new skills to use.

Course objectives:

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

Describe the key principles of Motivational Interviewing

Describe how to establish and engage people into 1:1 sessions

Practice Micro-skills of MI within the learning sets and transfer into day to day practice

Use the cycle of change model to assess a client’s readiness to change

Practice developing the use of MI skills by integrating MI theory into practicing skills with peers in learning sets

Develop the skills of reflective practice as a practitioner through the practice experiences within the workshops to transfer into day to day practice

Develop and transfer methods of reflective practice/peer supervision into the workplace to enhance and develop their skills in Motivational Interviewing

Undertake an observed session using MI skills with a colleague in the workplace which will then be presented back on the review day

Develop resources in the form of a toolkit to use within their day to day practice

Develop a practice plan to keep MI alive in the workplace
