Aimed at:

Joint Commissioning Managers and Group Members, Young People’s Commissioning staff, DA(A)T Coordinators.

Course content:

A combination of strategic discussion and practical application, this three-day course (packaged as one intensive two-day session followed by a review date to discuss and issues that have arisen or lessons that have been learned during a period of initial implementation) has been designed in consultation with a former Joint Commissioning Manager, and aims to provide insight and practical tools to help ensure that local services fully meet local needs. From future planning to practical implementation, the course will support commissioners in handling an increasingly demanding role, and will help them to commission services in line with SMAS Commissioning Standards.

Course objectives:

• On completion of the course participants will be able to:

• Commission and purchase service provision more strategically in line with SMAS Commissioning Standards

• Plan for future service provision

•  Evaluate and review service provision using appropriate monitoring mechanisms

• Apply learning practically in their role

DANOS Units or other National Occupational Standards:

CA1 Research the needs of the local population

CA2 Develop and review strategies and plans to meet local needs for substance misuse services

CA3 Promote the development of substance misuse services in the local area

CA4 Draw up specifications for substance misuse services

CB1 Invite tenders and award contracts for substance misuse services

CB2 Monitor and evaluate the quality, outcomes and costs effectiveness of substance misuse services

CB3 Procure substance misuse services for individuals
