The shops

We have now expanded our bookshops

a complete range of substance and management books.

We have delivered several programmes designed to enable generic community workers to support individual with a range of mental health issues in the community. These groups have included health visitors and GPs.

The programmes cover the core skills required to enable people to find the strength they need to thrive. This can be particularly important for people who are stranded on waiting lists or do not fit into categories normally seen by workers like Community Mental Health Teams. The course objectives listed below formed the basis for a 2 day course for Health Visitors commissioned by a Primary Care Trust in 20002

Core Skills for Public Health Nurses re: mental health issues in the community

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Clarify common mental health issues that their clients may have.
Use Egan problem solving mode to structure sessions with their clients.
List the core skills required to use the model.
Use a behavioural change model with their clients
Encourage patients to use a range of simple self-help techniques
Identify appropriate self-help resources they may be able to access.
Make an appropriate referral to statutory or voluntary sector bodies
