Practical training on the art of group work

This course will provide a practical and theoretical basis for facilitators who are new to group work.
We will look at what constitutes a group looking at how one can be established and established throughout its life. It will look at both how groups develop and how individuals may function within a group context. The role of the facilitator will be examined. The course will be run in an experiential way and offer practical learning situations that can be applied effectively.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:
  • Define what constitutes a group;
  • Identify the developmental stages in groups;
  • Clarify their role in facilitating groups;
  • List common roles people play in groups;
  • Identify common issues in facilitating groups.
  • Draw up a group contract to ensure practical levels of group safety;
  • Apply Tuckman's model of how groups develop to ones they run
  • Establish a basis for a safe and protective group;
  • Diagnose when problems arise in a group;
  • Intervene appropriately to help resolve group issues;
  • Monitor a group to ensure it is making progress towards its goal

Who will benefit from attending?

This course will be useful for anyone who has to rung groups on a regular basis.

Length 2 days – 9:30 – 4:30 (or equivalent)

DANOS Units or other National Occupational Standards:

AC3 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others
ENTO L10 Facilitate learning through presentations
ENTO L13 Facilitate group learning
