Preparing for Management


This course looks at the expectations on managers and is designed for people who are thinking of moving into their role. It looks at the natures of the roles with a particular emphasis on ways of supporting workers to develop within their roles and take charge of their own professional development.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:
The management role
  • Describe the expectations that the organisation and workers have of managers
  • Identify the political issues that impact on the work of an organisation
  • Use the relevant standards frameworks that govern activities
Leadership issues
  • Examine the benefits of different types of leadership style
  • Use their negotiation and communication skills to manage upwards within the organisation,
  • Work with their own and the organisation’s change process
Supervision and appraisal
  • Structure sessions with either a worker or a manager.
  • Give and receive constructive feedback
  • Make use of the supervision process to support their professional and personal development
  • Use the supervision process to monitor the quality of work and address performance issues.
Professional Development
  • Create a professional development plan that supports their work aspirations
  • Reflect on their own work in a structured way to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.
  • Clarify ways of learning at work that have the most benefit for team members and themselves
  • Use a portfolio to structure and record learning

Who will benefit from attending?

New managers of drug and alcohol services, or managers who would like a ‘refresher’ course..

Length 4 days – 9:30 – 4:30 (or equivalent)
